Frequently asked questions

How much is customs duty on a car in Macedonia?

Customs duty is 5% of the vehicle's value plus transport to the border. If the car was made in the EU and you have EUR.1 proof of origin, duty is 0%. On top of duty you pay motor vehicle tax (ДМВ) and 18% VAT.

How is ДМВ (motor vehicle tax) calculated?

ДМВ has two parts: a percentage of the car's value (0% up to €10,000, rising to 20% above €50,000) and an amount for each gram of CO₂ per kilometre (5–250 denars for petrol, 10–320 denars for diesel). Electric cars pay no ДМВ and plug-in hybrids pay half.

What value are the taxes calculated on?

Customs uses the car's catalogue value (Schwacke), not the price you paid, plus transport to the border. That's why the calculator estimates the catalogue value, and you can change it.

How much VAT do you pay when importing a car?

VAT is 18%, calculated on the car's value, transport, customs duty and ДМВ together.

Example: what are the taxes on a €15,000 car?

For a diesel car worth €15,000 with 120 g/km CO₂ and €300 transport, without EUR.1: duty €765, ДМВ €1,159 and VAT €3,100, about €5,024 in total. With EUR.1 proof (0% duty), about €3,706 in total.

Can a car below Euro 4 be registered?

No. Imported vehicles below the Euro 4 emissions standard can't be registered in Macedonia, so check the standard before buying.

Is the calculator free, and how accurate is it?

It's free and needs no sign-up. The formula follows the Customs Administration's rules; the catalogue value is an estimate, so confirm the final amount with a customs agent.

How this is calculated

Duty is 5%, or 0% for EU-made cars with EUR.1 proof of origin (hard to get for used cars, so we assume 5% by default). Transport to the border (€300 by default) is added to the value. Motor vehicle tax (ДМВ) is a percentage of the car's value (0–20%) plus a charge per gram of CO₂. Electric cars and cars over 35 years old pay no ДМВ; plug-in hybrids pay half. VAT is 18% of the value plus duty and ДМВ. For motorcycles, ДМВ depends on engine size and Euro standard (5–10 denars per cm³), with none up to 50 cm³.

This is an estimate. Customs uses its own catalogue value for the car and the CO₂ figure on its COC certificate. Cars below Euro 4 can't be registered. Agent, homologation and registration fees are extra.
